To determine whether a word can be modified using an adjective or adverb when it’s not used in a sentence, consider the word’s part of speech. Nouns and pronouns can be modified by adjectives, while verbs, adjectives, and adverbs can be modified by adverbs. If the word is a noun or pronoun, it can be modified by an adjective. If it’s a verb, adjective, or adverb, it can be modified by an adverb.
