Star Tally Marks

Star Tally Marks

Worksheet Description

Josh was counting all the stars he saw out the windows of his home.  You will cut out all of the numbers and match them to star tallies.  Make sure to use a bit of glue.

This worksheet is centered around the theme of stars and tally marks. It presents several groups of stars arranged in the traditional tally mark format, which is typically used for counting and recording numbers in increments of five. The task for the students is to count the number of stars in each group and then cut and paste the correct numeral from the options provided at the bottom of the page. The worksheet also includes a section for the teacher to give a qualification, represented by smiley faces, indicating the student’s performance.

The worksheet’s objective is to teach students how to use tally marks as a counting method. It helps them practice counting by ones and recognizing the pattern of tally marks where every fifth item is represented by a diagonal line that crosses the previous four. This exercise also enhances fine motor skills through the cut and paste activity. Additionally, it serves as an assessment tool for teachers to gauge a student’s counting abilities and their understanding of grouping in fives.
