DEAR and MAN

DEARMAN #13

Worksheet Description

The DEARMAN worksheet is a strategic framework from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) designed to enhance students’ communication skills. It serves as a blueprint for expressing oneself clearly and effectively, particularly when discussing sensitive issues. The acronym DEARMAN stands for Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindfulness, Appear confident, and Negotiate. These elements are central to the technique, each serving a unique purpose in the communication process. The worksheet prompts students to use the DEAR part to be factual and express feelings about a situation calmly and clearly, while the MAN part helps to maintain focus and manage emotional responses during the interaction.

By working through the DEARMAN steps, students are guided on how to describe a situation objectively, express their emotions using “I” statements, assert their needs calmly and clearly, and reinforce positive responses from the other person. They are also encouraged to stay mindful of the conversation’s goal, project confidence through their body language, and negotiate within clear limits. This methodical approach supports students in approaching conversations with preparation and intention, aiming to achieve more positive outcomes and foster mutual understanding.
