Ordering Fractions

Ordering Fractions

Worksheet Description

You are given 3 fractions and asked to order them from least to greatest.  You will also explore a fractional word problem that has you critically analyze a situation. This worksheet is designed to help students learn how to order fractions from least to greatest. It presents sets of three fractions in each problem, and students are instructed to show all of their work as they arrange the fractions in ascending order. The format allows for students to write the fractions on lines that suggest a number line, aiding in the visualization of the relative sizes of the fractions.

The worksheet aims to teach students not just to compare individual pairs of fractions, but to understand and articulate the relative value of multiple fractions at once. It emphasizes the process of reasoning about fractions’ sizes without necessarily converting them to a common denominator. In the “Think it Over” section, students are encouraged to confront common misconceptions about fraction size, helping them to understand that a fraction’s value is not solely determined by the size of its numerator or denominator. This exercise is designed to strengthen the students’ number sense and their ability to reason mathematically about fractions.
