Tuning Into Tones
Worksheet Description
This worksheet is a quiz that tests students’ understanding of intonation in spoken English. It consists of fill-in-the-blank questions that require students to identify different intonation patterns associated with various sentence types. The questions cover fundamental concepts of intonation, such as the typical intonation of yes-no questions, statements, Wh- questions, and the pattern used for the last item in a list. Additionally, there is a section where students will copy sentences from the board and draw the intonation patterns they hear above each sentence.
The “Tuning Into Tones – The Intonation Detective Quiz” aims to reinforce students’ knowledge of how intonation affects meaning in spoken language. It teaches them to recognize the rising intonation in yes-no questions and the falling intonation often found in statements and Wh- questions. This worksheet also touches on the common speech pattern of a rising intonation when listing items, with a fall at the end of the series. Through this exercise, students practice applying their theoretical understanding of intonation patterns to practical listening and writing tasks.
