The People Behind the Branches

The People Behind the Branches

Worksheet Description

The Legislative Branch is responsible for making and passing laws. It is made up of two parts: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate is like the older sibling of Congress. It has 100 members, two from each of the 50 states. Each senator’s job is to represent their state’s interests in making and passing laws. The person who leads the Senate is called the “Vice President of the United States.” However, the Vice President doesn’t do this job all the time. Instead, the senators choose one of their own to be the “President of the Senate” to lead their meeting.

The House of Representatives is like the younger sibling of Congress, but there are more of them. There are 435 members in the House, and each one represents a specific area of their state. They are called “Representatives” or “Members of Congress.” The leader of the House of Representatives is called the “Speaker of the House,” and they make sure the House runs smoothly.

The Executive Branch is responsible for enforcing or carrying out the laws. At the head of this branch is the President of the United States, who is like the team captain. The President has several important helpers:

The Vice President is like the President’s right-hand person. If something happens to the President, the Vice President takes over.

These are experts in different areas like education, health, and defense. They help the President make decisions and run the government smoothly.
