In the middle of the American Civil War, there was a very big and important battle called the Battle of Gettysburg. This battle is famous because it changed the direction of the war. Let’s learn about why this battle was so significant. The Battle of Gettysburg took place in a small town called Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. It happened over three days, from July 1 to July 3, 1863. The two sides, the Union (the North) and the Confederacy (the South), fought very hard during these days.

The Confederate army, led by General Robert E. Lee, had been winning many battles. General Lee thought that if he could win a big battle in the North, then the Northern people might get tired of the war and want to stop fighting. So, he decided to take his army into the North, and that’s how they ended up in Gettysburg.

The Union army, led by General George G. Meade, met the Confederate army at Gettysburg. The two armies fought fiercely. Soldiers on both sides showed great bravery, but the battle was very deadly and many people were hurt or lost their lives.

At the end of the three days, the Union army won the Battle of Gettysburg. This was a turning point in the war because it stopped General Lee’s plan to win in the North. After this battle, the Confederate army never again tried to fight so far up in the Northern states.
