Decoding Dialogues

Decoding Dialogues

Worksheet Description

Welcome to the “Decoding Subtext: Unspoken Meanings” worksheet! This engaging activity is designed to help students explore the intriguing world of subtext and how it shapes dialogue.

Students will start by listening to or reading a dialogue carefully. They will then complete a table with insightful details:

  1. “What do they want to say?” In this column, students will identify the true intentions or emotions behind the characters’ words.
  2. “Why can’t they say it?” Students will analyze the reasons that prevent the characters from expressing their true thoughts openly.
  3. “What do they say instead?” Here, students will reveal the alternative words the characters use to convey their message indirectly. They will also determine the type of speech, such as a lie, sarcasm, half-truth, or irony.

This exercise will sharpen students’ perception and critical thinking skills, enabling them to decipher the subtle subtext within dialogues, and grasp the underlying emotions and motives of the characters.
