Reflection Exercise
Worksheet Description
This worksheet serves as a guided project for students to explore the use of satire as a literary and social tool. The assignment begins by defining satire as a technique used to ridicule or mock the vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings of individuals or societies, often with the intention of inspiring change or reflection. Recognized for its humorous approach, satire frequently employs irony, sarcasm, and exaggeration to make its point.
The project is structured in four distinct parts to scaffold the students’ creative process. First, it encourages them to critically examine their community, state, or country and identify a pressing social issue that they believe warrants improvement. Next, students are tasked with specifying the problems associated with this issue, including the impact these problems have on society and why they are considered problematic.
Subsequently, students are asked to contemplate which elements of satire they could employ to address these identified issues and to articulate the reasons for their choices. The elements may include those listed in the worksheet or any others the students deem appropriate. Lastly, the worksheet challenges students to compose a satirical piece, at least one page in length, about the situation they have analyzed. This activity aims to develop their understanding of satire and its components, as well as to enhance their ability to apply this literary device in a context that promotes social awareness and critical thinking.
