Sameness vs. Freedom
Worksheet Description
This worksheet introduces students to the central themes of The Giver. It explains how the community eliminates pain, fear, and conflict by enforcing “Sameness,” but in doing so, also erases joy, love, and individuality. Jonas, as the Receiver of Memory, learns that true humanity requires both pain and joy. Students answer questions that encourage them to think critically about freedom, suffering, and what it means to live a full life.
This activity builds thematic analysis skills by guiding students to explore abstract concepts like freedom, love, and choice. It encourages them to make personal connections by reflecting on whether a safe but emotionless world would be preferable to one with both joy and suffering. These reflections deepen empathy and critical reasoning. It also strengthens comprehension of how literature raises moral and philosophical questions.
