Answering Questions

Reference Tools #8

Worksheet Description

The “Choosing Reference Tools” worksheet is an educational resource designed to teach students about the different types of reference tools and when to use them. This worksheet lists three reference tools at the top: A. Dictionary, B. Thesaurus, and C. Encyclopedia, and provides ten questions, each requiring the use of one of these tools to find the answer. Students must select the correct tool by writing the corresponding letter on the line provided.

Questions cover a range of topics and tasks, such as finding synonyms, definitions, factual information about countries and food, and understanding language usage. For example, students are asked to find another word for ‘independent’, the meaning of ‘freelance’, a good source of magnesium in food, or which country produces the most oil. This activity encourages students to critically think about the nature of the information they are seeking and to decide which reference source is most appropriate for that specific inquiry.

By completing this worksheet, students will gain a better understanding of how to efficiently and effectively find information. It also helps them to recognize that different questions require different sources, thereby improving their research skills. This tool is perfect for use in educational settings to reinforce lessons about library resources and information retrieval.
