Juneteenth, short for “June Nineteenth,” is an annual holiday observed on June 19th in the United States. It commemorates the date in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, proclaiming that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This announcement came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, making Juneteenth a symbol of the belated realization of freedom for many African Americans.

Juneteenth is celebrated as a day of reflection, remembrance, and joy, often with community gatherings, parades, music, food, and various cultural activities.
