Juneteenth

Worksheet Description

Juneteenth, short for “June Nineteenth,” is an annual holiday observed on June 19th in the United States. It commemorates the date in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, proclaiming that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This announcement came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, making Juneteenth a symbol of the belated realization of freedom for many African Americans.

Juneteenth is celebrated as a day of reflection, remembrance, and joy, often with community gatherings, parades, music, food, and various cultural activities. It serves as an important occasion to acknowledge the history of slavery, celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans, and promote unity and equality. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, further solidifying its significance in the nation’s history and ongoing journey towards racial justice and equality.
