Jellyfish: Mystical Ocean Drifters

Jellyfish are intriguing and mystical creatures that inhabit the ocean. They are not really fish, despite their name, and they belong to a group of animals called “cnidarians.” These sea creatures are fascinating to learn about, so let’s dive into the world of jellyfish and discover more about them!

What Jellyfish Look Like

Jellyfish come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Most jellyfish have a bell-shaped, translucent body, which makes them look like a floating umbrella. They can be pink, blue, yellow, or even transparent. Some jellyfish have long, flowing tentacles that trail behind them in the water. These tentacles are covered in tiny, stinging cells called nematocysts, which they use to catch prey.

Where Jellyfish Live

Jellyfish can be found in oceans all around the world, from the warm, tropical waters to the colder seas near the poles. They are often seen near the surface of the water, but they can also be found in deeper parts of the ocean. Some jellyfish prefer to stay close to the shore, while others venture into the open sea.

What Jellyfish Eat

Jellyfish are carnivorous creatures, which means they eat other animals. They mostly feed on tiny plankton, fish eggs, and small fish that get caught in their tentacles. When prey comes into contact with the stinging cells on their tentacles, the jellyfish paralyze it and then bring it to their mouth in the center of their bell.
