ICBD Themes

Worksheet Description

This worksheet is a celebration of International Children’s Book Day (ICBD), focusing on the diverse themes selected by host countries in recent years. At the top, students can personalize the sheet by writing their name. The document lists themes from the past five years, starting with the most recent theme chosen by Canada, “Stories are wings that help you soar every day,” and going back to Latvia’s theme, “The Small is Big in a Book.” Each theme reflects the unique cultural contribution of the host country to the global conversation about children’s literature.

Students are encouraged to engage with the themes by answering three reflective questions: which theme they like the best and why; how the theme brings attention to children’s books and inspires a love of reading; and what theme they would choose for the next ICBD. These questions are designed to prompt critical thinking about the messages conveyed through each theme and to foster creativity as students consider what theme they might propose. This activity not only enhances their understanding of ICBD but also encourages them to think about the importance of reading and the impact that books can have on young minds.
