First and Last Words

First and Last Words Worksheet

Worksheet Description

On each page, circle the word you read first. Draw a box around the word you read last.

This worksheet is a literacy tool designed to teach students the conventional directionality of reading English text. It contains three sets of simple sentences spaced out on the page. Students are directed to circle the first word they read in each set and then draw a box around the last word they read. The activity is set up to visually guide students through the process of reading from the beginning to the end of each sentence.

The worksheet is aimed at reinforcing the left-to-right and top-to-bottom progression that is standard in reading English. It teaches students to identify the starting and ending points of sentences, helping them understand the flow of written language. The circling and boxing tasks help to focus the students’ attention on the order of words and the progression of reading across the page. This exercise is essential for developing reading fluency and for training the eyes to move correctly across lines of text.
