Ferdinand Magellan

Worksheet Description
A long time ago, in the age of brave explorers and vast oceans, there was a man named Ferdinand Magellan. He was from a country called Portugal, but it was the king of Spain who gave him the chance to go on one of the most amazing adventures ever!
Magellan had a big dream. He believed that there was a way to sail from Europe to Asia by going west, instead of the usual eastern route. This would mean finding a passage through the Americas, a shortcut to the Spice Islands, which were famous for their tasty spices like cloves and nutmeg.
In 1519, with the king’s blessing, Magellan set out with five ships on this daring journey. The trip was filled with challenges. There were fierce storms, tricky waters, and sometimes, the crew even ran out of food. But Magellan was determined to keep going.
After about a year, Magellan’s fleet reached a narrow waterway at the tip of South America. This passage is now called the Strait of Magellan, named after him! The waters were tough to navigate, but after battling through, they entered a big ocean. Magellan named it the “Pacific Ocean” because it seemed so peaceful compared to the stormy Atlantic.
