Separate The Two

Diagramming Sentences #5

Worksheet Description

This worksheet provides a series of sentences that students must analyze in order to identify and diagram the subjects and predicates. Each sentence is listed with two blanks where students are expected to write the subject and predicate separately. A line is then drawn between them to visually distinguish these two essential elements of the sentence. An example at the top of the page shows how to correctly perform the task with the sentence “Joe walked the dog,” clearly separating “Joe” as the subject and “walked” as the predicate.

The worksheet is designed to teach students the fundamental skill of identifying the subject and predicate within a sentence. By separating these components, students learn to recognize the subject as the person or thing that performs the action and the predicate as the part of the sentence that contains the verb and tells something about the subject. This exercise not only strengthens students’ grammatical knowledge but also enhances their sentence construction and comprehension abilities. It is a foundational practice for effective writing and critical reading.
