DEARMAN #2

Worksheet Description

The DEARMAN worksheet is an instructional tool from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) aimed at improving communication skills among students. The acronym DEARMAN provides a mnemonic for the essential steps in effective interpersonal communication: Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindfulness, Appear confident, and Negotiate. Each letter corresponds to a specific action, guiding students through the process of articulating a problem, expressing feelings, asserting needs, and working toward a resolution.

In the first step, “Describe,” students are instructed to objectively state the situation without bias or judgment. “Express” involves clearly stating their feelings using “I” statements to communicate personal emotions without placing blame. In “Assert,” students practice conveying their needs and wants in a calm and clear manner. “Reinforce” encourages acknowledging and appreciating positive responses from others. “Mindfulness” reminds students to stay focused on the topic at hand, avoiding distractions. “Appear confident” emphasizes the importance of nonverbal cues, such as body language, to project self-assurance. Lastly, “Negotiate” involves finding a compromise that respects both parties’ limits. This structured approach empowers students to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics and advocate for themselves in a respectful and effective way.
