Confidence And Negotiation

DEARMAN #11

Worksheet Description

The DEARMAN worksheet is a focused tool used in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to assist students in the development of assertive communication and effective interpersonal interaction. The acronym DEARMAN stands for Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindfulness, Appear confident, and Negotiate. Each section of the worksheet provides a prompt for students to articulate how they will approach these key aspects of communication. For instance, students are asked to describe a situation without bias, express their emotions clearly, assert their needs and wants, and think about how to positively reinforce the person responding to them.

The worksheet also addresses the ‘MAN’ part of DEARMAN, where students are prompted to remain mindful of their objectives, appear confident, and be prepared to negotiate. Students must consider their goals, how to maintain focus, and the body language they will use to convey confidence. Additionally, they are asked to reflect on their boundaries by considering what compromises they are willing to make and what they are not. This practice encourages students to think ahead about how they can apply these skills in real-life situations, aiming to enhance their ability to communicate effectively and to advocate for themselves while respecting others.
