Transforming Sentences

Worksheet Description
This worksheet consists of sentences that each contain either a simple or a compound subject. The task for students is to rewrite sentences with simple subjects so that they have compound subjects, and to rewrite sentences with compound subjects so that they have simple subjects. For instance, a sentence with the simple subject “That poem” should be changed to include a compound subject, like “That poem and the painting.” Conversely, a sentence starting with a compound subject like “My uncle and my brother” should be split into two sentences with simple subjects.
The educational goal of this worksheet is to enhance students’ understanding of sentence structure, specifically the difference between simple and compound subjects. It teaches them to identify whether a sentence has a single entity performing the action or multiple entities doing so together. This exercise also helps students learn how to vary sentence structure in writing, making their work more dynamic. Additionally, it promotes critical thinking as they have to create new subjects or split existing ones while maintaining the meaning of the original sentences.
