On The Spectrum

Character Development #1

Worksheet Description

This Character Development worksheet is centered around the concept of character change within a story. It provides definitions of different types of characters—symbolic, round, stock, dynamic, and static—and asks students to match these character types to their descriptions. After matching, students are instructed to place each character type on a spectrum based on how much they change throughout a story, from “Changes the Most” to “Changes the Least”. The activity includes an illustration of a figure pondering, which reinforces the reflective nature of the task.

The worksheet is designed to teach students about the various roles characters play in literature and how they evolve within a narrative. It introduces the terminology used to describe characters, from those who undergo significant development to those who remain largely the same. By categorizing characters based on their level of development, students learn to analyze character arcs and understand their significance to the plot and themes of a story. This exercise enhances students’ literary analysis skills and deepens their comprehension of character dynamics in storytelling.
