Matching Purpose
Worksheet Description
Certain text features are found primarily in texts that are written for specific purpose. Match each text type and the text features to the different possible author purposes.
This worksheet introduces students to four major text types: narrative, expository, technical, and persuasive. It asks them to connect each type with its matching author’s purpose, such as informing, entertaining, or convincing readers. In addition, students link specific text features-like characters, headings, steps, graphs, captions, and illustrations-to the correct type of writing. The activity encourages students to think about how structure and features support the writer’s goals.
By working through this worksheet, students learn to identify the relationship between text purpose, structure, and features. This sharpens their ability to recognize patterns across different kinds of writing, improving both comprehension and analysis. It also develops critical thinking as they evaluate which features best align with different author intentions. Over time, such practice helps students read more strategically and write with clearer purpose.
