Worksheet Description

This worksheet is designed to guide students through the concept of archetypes in literature and other forms of storytelling. It is divided into three sections: Situational, Symbolic, and Character archetypes. Each section has space for a definition and examples, allowing students to explore and document various recurring elements that create a deeper understanding of narrative themes and characters. An archetype, in essence, is a typical character, an action, or a situation that seems to represent universal patterns of human nature.

In the Situational section, learners will define and provide instances of archetypical scenarios like ‘The Quest’ or ‘The Journey’ that are commonly found in stories across cultures. Symbolic archetypes, such as the use of light and darkness to represent good and evil, will be explored in the second section. The final part focuses on Character archetypes, such as the ‘Hero’, ‘Mentor’, or ‘Trickster’, which students will define and exemplify. This exercise aims to heighten students’ perception of literary and cultural narratives, fostering an appreciation for the depth and complexity of storytelling by identifying its fundamental components. Through this engagement, students will gain insights into the building blocks that form the foundation of stories that have captivated humans for generations.
