The Events of Apartheid

The Events of Apartheid

Worksheet Description

Apartheid was a time in South Africa when people were separated and treated unfairly based on the color of their skin. The leaders made rules that kept people with different skin colors apart, so they couldn’t go to the same schools, parks, or even live in the same neighborhoods. This was very wrong and hurtful. Thankfully, many brave people stood up against apartheid, and now everyone in South Africa is treated more fairly and allowed to be together, no matter what they look like.

The worksheet provides a structured layout for students to explore and document the history of apartheid in South Africa. Divided into four sections, the sheet prompts students to describe the nature of apartheid (“What was it?”), list significant events during this period (“Key Events”), identify the main figures and organizations involved (“Key People/Organizations”), and finally, detail the circumstances that led to the end of apartheid (“How did it end?”).

The primary aim of this worksheet is to guide students in structuring their knowledge about the apartheid era in a coherent and organized manner. By compartmentalizing information into specific categories, the activity encourages learners to think critically about each facet of the topic, fostering a deeper and more comprehensive understanding. Moreover, this worksheet promotes research skills and the synthesis of information from various sources. Through active engagement, students are able to contextualize the significance of apartheid in South African history and its global implications.
