Mayan Pyramids
Worksheet Description
The Maya are well known for their pyramids. They built two types of pyramids. Both had the familiar pyramid shape and steep steps of the side by which people could climb to the top. Both types were built for religious purposes and for the gods. The difference between these two types of pyramids are as follows. The first type had a temple at the top. Priests climbed up to this template to sacrifice to the gods. Important religious ceremonies were held in these temples. The second type of pyramid was built to a god. These pyramids were not meant to be climbed or touched at all by humans. The steps were usually too steep to climb. This second type of pyramid sometimes had secret doors, tunnels, and traps.
