Making Adverbs

On this worksheet, students will make an adverb out of each adjective by simply adding -ly. The rules are provided on top of the page as a guide. We can turn many adjectives into adverbs by adding – ly to the end of the adjective. For adjectives ending in a consonant then y, change the y to i before adding –ly. For adjectives ending in a vowel then an l, keep the l and add an additional –ly.

The exercise of changing adjectives to adverbs by adding -ly helps students understand how to form and use adverbs correctly. By adding -ly to adjectives, students learn how this suffix transforms the word into an adverb that modifies verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
