Skill Review Worksheet

Worksheet Description

This worksheet is a themed activity designed to strengthen a student’s ability to mentally calculate numbers that are directly before and after a given number as well as those that are ten higher or lower. The format is similar to a previous worksheet, with a given number in the center of a structure of blocks that look like a ladder, and empty blocks around it where students are to fill in the numbers that are one less, one more, ten less, and ten more than the given number. An example is provided at the top to demonstrate the expected method to fill in the blocks. The tasks involve various two and three-digit numbers, requiring the student to understand and manipulate different place values.

The educational aim of this worksheet is to develop a student’s number sense, particularly their understanding of sequential ordering and place value. By working with both one and ten increments, students become more adept at quick mental math and learn to navigate the base-ten number system effectively. This type of exercise can build confidence in handling arithmetic calculations without the need for calculators or other aids. Lastly, the self-evaluation at the end with smiley faces offers a way for students to reflect on their level of comfort and success with the task.
