Word Detectives
Worksheet Description
Students read four short passages and search for words that follow the final y to i spelling rule. Each passage includes several changed words, such as past-tense verbs, plurals, comparisons, or adverbs. Students record each changed form and then write the root word it came from. The detective theme asks students to uncover how the words were built.
This worksheet helps students work backward from a changed word to its original form. That process shows whether they truly understand the rule instead of only copying finished spellings. Reading the words inside short passages also helps students see how they are used in meaningful sentences. The activity improves word analysis, reading attention, spelling knowledge, and the ability to recognize patterns in real writing.
This worksheet is part of our changing y to i worksheet series.
