Worksheet Description

Students begin by changing twelve root words into both their -ed and -ing forms. After building each pair, they sort the word numbers according to the spelling rule used. The categories include simply adding an ending, dropping a final e, doubling the final consonant, and changing y to i for the past-tense form. The two-part design asks students to create the words first and then explain how they changed.

This worksheet helps students see that word endings follow patterns that can be sorted and understood. Writing both forms side by side makes it easier to compare how the same root changes with different endings. Sorting by rule also moves students beyond guessing and teaches them to explain the spelling process. This strengthens grammar knowledge, word analysis, spelling accuracy, and independent learning habits.
